I have always greatly admired A Softer World for its ingenuity and ability to teach a hard lesson in its abruptness, but this week's strip hit me hard. Quietly, it turns a birthday celebration and a friendly interchange of macabre jokes into something much more real: a contemplation on the effects of denying someone a day of birth. Suddenly, dead baby jokes aren't so hilarious; they're life or death.
